Hope Sails, Inc. inspires, encourages, and offers hope to teens through maritime real life experiences with hands on involvement at sea developing in the teens good character, responsibility, team work, and respect for others.
Hope Sails offers a real life experience to teens aboard the Waymaker, a 43' Endeavour sailboat. The teens will be under the supervision of the vessel captain and will learn the various skills necessary to operate a large boat. All of the functions necessary to be carried out during the experience will be done by the teens themselves.
During their voyage, the teens will learn skills such as: navigation; helmsmanship; sail handling; docking and anchoring. The voyage will be an extended period of time, allowing the teens to adjust to the sea life experience before returning home.
Accompanying the teens and captain aboard the vessel will be a mentor. The mentor will have developed a theme for the voyage. The mentor will give the teens a message each morning and each evening under the stars. The message will serve as part of a curriculum to direct, instruct, encourage and motivate the teens to improve their lives.
We see these teens as the future of our country. It is our belief that all teens are "at risk" in this world we live in. Our goal is to provide them with the tools to respond positively to the challenges that the modern world presents to them.
